Narcissa was torn between feeling nervous and feeling elated. She was meeting Lucius that night after dinner! She wasn’t sure what they would talk about. As she stared at the fire in the common room, she contemplated what would happen. What could she talk about with him? 

Several people walked past her on their way to who-cares-where, giving her strange looks. She supposed they thought it abnormal for her to be sitting by herself. She was usually surrounded by people, being the pretty and outgoing Black as she was. 

Out of the corner of her eye, she saw a familiar hunched back walking out of the Slytherin common room. A brilliant idea seized her, and she jumped up. 

“Oi! Snape!” she called. Why hadn’t she thought of it sooner? Snape and Lucius were friends, he could give her some pointers on what to expect tonight. She smiled as she ran after him into the dungeon hallway.

Severus was walking quite peacefully to the dungeons on his way to the next class when he heard a voice calling his name. He spun around and saw one of the Black sisters running towards him. He was unsure which one it was until she came closer. As she came closer he realized it was Narcissa.

“Hello, Narcissa.” he said. “What do you need?”

Rodolphus’ patience was dwindling. Marie had best approach the youth soon or it will damper his entire evening. He kisses Bellatrix quickly on the forehead. He walked over to Marie and bumped into her gently then kept walking. Rodolphus came face to face with Severus. “Leaving already are we? I think not! Come now chat and Bellatrix and I.” 

Severus grunted as Rodolphus approached him. First he thought Rodolphus might yell at him or disregard him but when he was invited to talk with him Bellatrix, Severus was quite surprised. Slowly, Severus followed Rodolphus to where Bellatrix was.

Severus stood stiffly beside them and muttered a quiet greeting.

Lily lightly frowned as she noticed panic flash across her best friends face. As much as he would like to believe Severus could never hide his emotions from Lily, she of course went along with this idea, not wanting to upset her friend.

Sighing Lily soon realised that she would have to once again play dumb to Sev’s true feelings. “I was just making sure Sev” she smiled before continuing “If there is a problem you know you can talk to me right?”

Deep down she knew the question was pointless, Sev hardly ever shared deep emotions with her, however Lily believes it’s always best to let somebody know you’re there for them, even if they never come to you.

“Sev it’s getting cold out here, do you want to go inside somewhere? You can pick where of course!”

Severus smiled and quickly said, “Of course.” What he just said was one of the biggest lies he ever told. As much as Severus wanted to share his problems with Lily, he didn’t want to pull her in the trouble that was going through his life. She meant to much to him. He wouldn’t be selfish and talk to her about just so he would feel comfort.

He was just going to reply when out of the corner of his eye he saw Kingsley and Mary in the water. Automatically he became nervous. When Severus was around any one of Lily’s friends he always had a queasy feeling. It was always awkward because he hardly knew them and felt that he was ruining their fun.

While motioning his head towards the pair, Severus said, “Do you want to join them?”

Rodolphus’ eyes penetrated Severus. It seemed Marie had been held up by Nott. He made a note to himself that Nott’s attitude would have to be dealt with promptly. He looked a Bellatrix, unwilling to end their conversation. He nonverbally cast a spell that caused all exits to block Snape. He would not be leaving until Rodolphus said so. That would give Marie time to get to him, and if she continued to fail him then we could just have to drag Bella with him and push Marie and Severus together. 

The time passed by slowly in Severus’ mind. No one had approached him but he out of the corner of his eye he thought he saw Rodolphus glance at him. With a sigh Severus got up to leave. Slowly he came to the door and he tried to open it. It was locked. Severus knew this wasn’t just a coincidence.

Severus sat on one of the very saggy couches in the corner of the common room. The music from the ongoing party vibrated through his ears. He had a cup of butterbeer in his hands but didn’t have the mood to even take a sip. So far for him this was one boring party. The others were all on the dance floor grinding like there’s no tomorrow. Severus found their actions quite amusing and ridiculous.

Soon his thoughts wandered over to Rodolphus and the rest of the older Slytherin house members. Severus was sick of being left out of everything just because Lily was his friend. They regarded him like he had something special in him but they didn’t know how to unlock it. Severus absolutely despised being the odd one out and he kept trying to think of ways to prove himself but all his ideas were useless.

This night had proved to be very boring to him. If nothing exciting happened in the next few minutes, he would head off to bed.

“You come out here to relax as well? I never knew that Sev, I guess you do learn something new everyday” Lily continued to destroy the grass the pair were currently sitting on, creating a small pile of torn up grass next to Severus’ head.

“What was I saying before? Well…erm… you see Theodore Nott and Rodolphus Lestrange have both told me to stay away from you, apparently I’m ‘tainting your reputation’ I told them to get lost of course, but I just thought you should know, incase they said anything to you.” Lily stopped ripping the grass with a large pile of dew covered grass in her hand, she turned to look up at Sev, searching for any signs of discomfort or upset on his face.

“Sev, Are you okay?” Lily asked quietly.

“Yeah I guess we do…” he replied and trailed off. He chewed the inside of his mouth as he waited to see if Lily would question him more on the topic but to his delight she continued to rip out more grass and place it by his head.

Lily spoke again but this time it wasn’t about relaxing. Fear filled him as he she told him about Nott and Lestrange. One thing they had was power and if Severus didn’t oblige to their ideas they could get the whole Slytherin house to turn against him with one simple command. Severus was sick of being put down by the other houses and now he was going to get put down by his own.

Severus needed to find a way to somehow please them. He needed to make them think he was a worthy Slytherin and that he was worthy of their time. Plus he needed to do all of this while maintaining his friendship with Lily. His fear was quickly replaced with sadness

Trying to keep a fake smile on, Severus replied in a joking manner “Me? I’m fine. What would make you think I’m not?”

Lily smiled warmly at her friend “You’re right Sev, one day I’ll make them see that blood makes no difference. I just wish all Slytherins were as accepting as you.”

Lily began to rip clumps of the dewy green grass out of the earth, unsure of how to approach the next subject. “He was erm… saying something else as well Sev.” She paused, unable to continue. Maybe it was better if she didn’t mention it, after all it would only make things awkward for him around his housemates and Lily always had the feeling he didn’t get on with them well to begin with. 

 ”Actually, it doesn’t matter. How come you’re out here anyway Sev?” She desperately hoped that her change of subject would distract him enough to forget the previous.

Severus looked up at the sky and tried to find a way to answer her question. He didn’t want to say he came out to smoke, because he wasn’t sure what Lily’s thoughts would be on his new “hobby.” Plainly, he said, “Oh, I just came out here to… relax. Clear my thoughts…” He shurgged and stared at the lake, deliberately not looking at her.

Thinking of what to say next he remembered that she had said something before she asked him why he came down here. Looking up at her he said, “What did you want to say before anyways?”
